I recently stumbled across this video of Ben Horowitz talking with Google Ventures about his investment strategy. This seemed to be just another video talking about the perfect slide deck and how to project sales into the future – standard stuff to tell a room full of entrepreneurs that are hoping to build the next facebook or twitter. But then at minute 17, Ben starts talking about courage, the courage to build a great company, to lead with integrity, to stand up for what you believe in even if it means facing public embarrassment or derision.
We often don’t hear enough about courage or character. When funders are making decisions, they say that the team is the most important component. Too often this is assumed to mean a nice job title, previous experience in the space, or an extensive network.
It’s rare to hear courage included in that list of attributes.
